eSIM & Pocket Wi-Fi

Staying connected in Japan (eSIM & pocket Wi-Fi)

Having maps, translation, and ride apps working the moment you land at Narita or Haneda is the single most useful piece of trip prep there is. We recommend the AnyFone JAPAN data eSIM: from ¥990, with purchase and setup handled entirely online.

Japan Data eSIM

Japan eSIM Fixed Data

A data-only eSIM that runs on Japan’s major carrier networks. There is no physical SIM to pick up or return. A QR code arrives by email right after purchase.

  • Price From ¥990 Tax included. Varies by the data-and-days combination you choose
  • Data 3–30GB 5 sizes: 3GB / 5GB / 10GB / 20GB / 30GB
  • Duration 1–30 days 13 options. Day-by-day increments from 1 to 7 days
  • Nationwide coverage 99% docomo / IIJ networks (3G and 4G)

Because you combine data volume and duration freely, you can size the plan to your trip with no waste, from a 3-day business trip to a month-long stay. Even after you burn through the high-speed data, the connection continues at 256kbps, so your maps and messaging never cut out entirely. If you would rather not think about data at all, there is a separate plan called eSIM Japan 5G Unlimited Data.

How It Works

3 steps from purchase to going online

The whole thing takes about 10 minutes. Do it a few days before departure and you will not be rushed.

  1. Step 1 Check your phone is compatible

Two things must both be true: your phone is carrier-unlocked (or was sold unlocked), and it supports eSIM. If either one fails, the eSIM will not work.

  2. Step 2 Choose a plan and buy

Pick the plan, data volume, duration, and quantity, then pay. You enter your name, an email address (where the QR code is sent), a billing address, and credit card details. Cards issued outside Japan are accepted.

  3. Step 3 Receive the QR code

The eSIM installation QR code and setup instructions arrive by email. Scan it and follow the on-screen prompts. That is the whole setup. No app to download, no account to create.

Finish the setup before you leave home, by far the most reliable way

Installing an eSIM requires an internet connection. Travelers who wait until Japan often find the free airport Wi-Fi too congested to get through it. Our standing advice: complete the setup on your home connection, then switch the line on after you land in Japan. Maps and translation work from the moment you touch down.

Important Notes

Read this before you buy or set up

This is where most of the real-world questions come from. Almost every problem can be avoided by knowing the points below.

Activate within 30 days of purchase

After 30 days the eSIM can no longer be activated. If your departure is more than a month away, watch the timing of your purchase. We recommend buying once your travel dates are confirmed.

Day one runs from the moment of activation until 23:59 Japan time

It is not a 24-hour clock. If you activate in the evening Japan time, that day burns a full day of your plan in a few hours. Activate on the morning of your arrival day, or choose a plan with a day or two of buffer.

No auto-renewal, no auto-billing

The connection may not drop immediately when your plan expires, but your contract will never be extended or charged without your say-so. There is no cancellation procedure to worry about either.

On Android, set the APN manually if you cannot connect

If the internet does not work after installing the eSIM, set the APN manually using the details in your email. The APN is vmobile.jp. No username or password is needed.

Google Pixel phones may need roaming switched on

If you still cannot connect after setting up the eSIM and APN, go to Settings → Network & internet → the settings icon for this eSIM → turn Roaming on. On Pixel phones, this setting is very often the culprit.

eSIM email missing? Check your spam folder

If the QR code email is nowhere to be found, look in your spam folder first, and make sure your mail settings accept messages from the @anyfone.jp domain.

Confirm eSIM compatibility before you buy

Your phone must be both carrier-unlocked (or sold unlocked) and eSIM-capable. Buy without checking and you may end up with an eSIM you cannot use. How to check is covered in the FAQ below.

eSIM vs Pocket Wi-Fi

eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi: how to decide

The basic rule: eSIM for solo travelers, pocket Wi-Fi when several people want to share one device. Both have drawbacks, so here they are, honestly.

Traveling solo? Pick this

eSIM

From ¥990

  • Nothing to pick up, nothing to return. The emailed QR code is all there is
  • No extra gadget to carry and no extra battery to worry about
  • Tethering is supported, so you can share briefly with a travel companion
  • Will not work on phones without eSIM support. This is the one check you cannot skip
  • No voice calls or SMS. Calls go through VoIP apps

Pocket Wi-Fi

For families and groups

  • One unit serves the whole family. The more people, the cheaper per person
  • Phone-agnostic, and works even for handsets without eSIM support
  • Needs charging every day, which usually means carrying a power bank too
  • Must be returned, which means one more errand at an airport mailbox on your way home
  • Split up for the day and whoever is not holding the unit goes offline

We do not recommend relying on free Wi-Fi alone

Japan has public Wi-Fi at stations, convenience stores, and cafes, but it usually demands email sign-ups or terms screens at every connection, and it is nearly useless outdoors, on trains, and in rural areas. The places you need a map, a transfer search, or directions when lost are precisely the places without Wi-Fi. A few thousand yen erases that entire problem, so we strongly recommend arriving with your own connection.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most. If yours is not here, just ask us.

How do I check whether my smartphone supports eSIM?

On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About and scroll to the bottom: if you see an EID entry, the phone supports eSIM. On Android, look under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs for an option like eSIM or Add SIM. Also confirm with your carrier that the phone is unlocked. Most phones bought in North America are unlocked, but a lock can linger, for example while installment payments are still running.

I set up the eSIM but I have no internet

On Android, the APN often fails to configure automatically. Set it manually using the details in your email: the APN is vmobile.jp, with no username or password. On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular and check that the eSIM line is switched on and selected as the line for cellular data.

I use a Google Pixel and it will not connect even after setup

On Pixel phones the roaming setting is very often the cause. Go to Settings → Network & internet → the settings icon for this eSIM → turn Roaming on. Even with the eSIM and APN configured correctly, the phone will not connect while this is off.

I bought the eSIM but no QR code email arrived

Check your spam folder first, because Gmail and Outlook sometimes file it there automatically. Make sure your mail settings accept messages from the @anyfone.jp domain, and double-check that the email address you entered at purchase was spelled correctly.

When should I buy?

You must start activation within 30 days of purchase. After that the eSIM can no longer be activated. Buy within a month of departure, once your travel dates are confirmed. The setup itself is best done on your home Wi-Fi before you leave, with the line switched on after you arrive in Japan.

How are the days of use counted?

Day one runs from the moment you activate until 23:59 Japan time, not a full 24-hour block. Activate at night and your first day is gone in a few hours. Either activate on the morning of your arrival day, or pick a plan slightly longer than your stay.

What happens when the data runs out? Are there extra charges?

After the high-speed data is used up, the connection continues at 256kbps. It is slow, but maps and messaging still work. There is no auto-renewal or auto-billing, so charges can never creep up on you. The connection may not drop immediately after the plan expires, but that does not trigger any extra billing either.

Do I get a phone number? Can I call or text?

This is a data-only eSIM: no voice calls, no SMS, and no Japanese phone number. For calls, use a VoIP app over the data connection. If you need to receive SMS confirmations for restaurant or hotel bookings, consider keeping your home line active for SMS only.

Does tethering work?

Yes. You can use your phone as a hotspot for a companion’s phone, a laptop, or a tablet. It does drain the host phone’s battery quickly, though. If several people will share a connection all day, a pocket Wi-Fi is the better fit.

Where do I buy and pay?

Everything happens on the partner site anyfone.com (in English). Click through from our site, then enter your name, email address, billing address, and credit card details to pay. Cards issued outside Japan are accepted, so Canadian residents can buy without any workaround.

Ask about connectivity when you ask about your itinerary

How many days and how many GB you need depends on where you go and how much you move. Rural touring or cities only? Lots of photos and video to upload, or not much? Once your itinerary takes shape, the right data size becomes obvious. Feel free to bundle the question in with your tour or flight inquiry.

  • We estimate the data you will need from your trip length and destinations
  • Traveling as a group? We will walk you through the pocket Wi-Fi comparison too
  • Handle it together with your transport and hotel arrangements in one conversation
