Getting around once you arrive

Getting around Matsuyama means the Iyotetsu streetcars. The Matsuyama Castle ropeway station, Okaido, and Dogo Onsen are all connected by the network. ¥200 per ride, ¥800 for a day pass. The sightseeing “Botchan Train,” a diesel car styled after a Meiji-era steam locomotive, also runs, and you can ride it with a supplement. For Matsuyama Castle, take the ropeway or chairlift (¥1,050 round trip), or walk up in 20 minutes. The Shimanami Kaido starts at Imabari, and it is 70 km by rental bicycle to Onomichi.

Tickets and passes worth knowing

The nationwide JR Pass covers the Shiokaze limited express on the JR Yosan Line. The JR Shikoku All Shikoku Rail Pass (3–7 days) is worthwhile if you are covering a lot of ground within Shikoku. The Matsuyama streetcars are not JR and are not covered, so buy the separate Iyotetsu day pass (¥800).

Frequently asked questions

Can I cycle the Shimanami Kaido?

Yes. It is about 70 km from Imabari to Onomichi on a dedicated cycling route. You can ride it in a day, though many people spend two, staying overnight on one of the islands. Rental bicycles can be dropped off at the other end.

What about the fast boat from Hiroshima?

The Setonaikai Kisen fast boat reaches Matsuyama in 1 hour 15 minutes via Kure. It has value as a voyage across the Seto Inland Sea in its own right. The fare is higher than the train, though, and sailings are cancelled in bad weather.

Planning essentials for Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen

Beyond the main topic of this article, here is a summary of everything you need to plan a trip to Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen, with links to the full article on each subject.

A one-day route at a glance

9:00 Matsuyama Castle → 11:00 Ninomaru garden & the Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum → 12:30 Lunch on Okaido or Gintengai → 14:00 On to Dogo Onsen → 14:30 Dogo Onsen Honkan → 16:00 Dogo Haikara-dori → 17:00 The Dogo sotoyu baths → 18:30 Dinner at your inn

With half a day, pick either Dogo Onsen or Matsuyama Castle. Dogo takes 2–3 hours including a soak; the castle takes about 2 hours with the ropeway round trip.

Extending beyond day one

On day 2, try Uchiko (a merchant town designated an Important Preservation District, with the wooden Uchikoza theater), Ozu (the “little Kyoto of Iyo”), or the Shimanami Kaido (a 70 km cycling route from Imabari to Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture). On day 3, head east to Takamatsu or south to Kochi. Shikoku is mountainous and travel takes time, so basing yourself in Matsuyama and working outward is the realistic approach. For the full timed itinerary, see the Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen itinerary.

What to eat

  • Jakoten: Small fish ground into a paste and deep-fried. Everyday food in Ehime
  • Citrus: Mikan, iyokan, setoka, beni madonna. Ehime grows more varieties than anywhere in Japan
  • Matsuyama-zushi: Pressed sushi made with Seto Inland Sea fish. Food for celebrations
  • Botchan dango: A Dogo specialty: dumplings wrapped in three colors of sweet bean paste, named from the Natsume Soseki novel
  • Imabari yakibuta tamago meshi: An Imabari local dish: roast pork and a fried egg over rice

Good to know before you go

  • Crowds at the Dogo Onsen Honkan: Weekends and evenings are busy. 6–8 AM is quietest
  • The Honkan courses: There are several options: bathing only, bathing plus the second-floor lounge, and so on. You choose at the ticket machine
  • Tattoos: The Dogo Onsen Honkan has no explicit tattoo ban at present, but inn bathhouses set their own policies
  • The climb to Matsuyama Castle: A 20-minute slope on foot. The ropeway or chairlift is easier
  • Yuatari (bathing fatigue): Take breaks between baths so you do not overdo the public bath circuit
  • The Botchan Train: It runs on a limited schedule and requires a supplement
  • Summer heat: The Seto Inland Sea is humid. Avoid the castle climb in the middle of the day

More frequently asked questions about Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen

Can I bathe at the Dogo Onsen Honkan?

Yes. It is a working public bath, with admission from ¥460 depending on the course you choose. The preservation and repair work that began in 2019 was completed in 2024, and the whole building is now in use.

What makes Dogo Onsen special?

It is among the oldest hot springs in Japan, said to go back 3,000 years, and it appears in the Nihon Shoki chronicle. The Honkan building dates from 1894, and there are almost no other cases of an Important Cultural Property still serving as a working public bath.

Can I bathe at Dogo in the morning?

The Honkan opens at 6 AM. First thing in the morning the bath is mostly locals, with few tourists, and it is quiet.

Is winter worth it?

Yes. It is mild with no snow, it is peak citrus season, and it is when the hot springs feel best. There are fewer visitors too.

Which taimeshi should I eat?

Uwajima taimeshi, sashimi over rice with raw egg, is the more unusual and the more memorable. Matsuyama taimeshi, cooked with the rice, is the more refined. If you have time, try both.

Are the mikan juice taps real?

They are. Matsuyama Airport and some facilities in Dogo have taps that pour 100% mikan juice. You pay for it (around ¥350), but it is a very Ehime thing to do.

Can I stay at the Dogo Onsen Honkan?

The Honkan is a public bathhouse, not an inn. Dogo has many ryokan, and the usual pattern is to stay at one and walk over to the Honkan to bathe.

What is the best way to get there from Tokyo?

Fly. Haneda to Matsuyama Airport takes 1 hour 25 minutes, and the airport to Dogo is 40 minutes by bus. By rail, via Okayama, it is close to 6 hours.

Can I bathe with tattoos?

The Dogo Onsen Honkan posts no explicit prohibition, but inn bathhouses set their own policies. Let us know when you book and we will confirm and arrange accordingly.

Does the Dogo Onsen Honkan get crowded?

There are waits on weekends and in the evening. It is quietest from 6 to 8 AM, when you bathe alongside locals.
