Airfares make up the largest share of a Yaeyama trip. Ishigaki has plenty of lodging across a wide price range. Rooms on the outlying islands are limited and need booking early.

A sample budget

For 4 days and 3 nights, budget ¥90,000–150,000 per person (roughly CA$900–1,500): ¥55,000 for return flights, ¥45,000 for three nights, ¥6,000 for island ferries, ¥14,000 for two days of rental car, ¥15,000 for food, and ¥10,000 for activities. The Yaeyamas are an expensive destination by Japanese standards.

Cuts that actually save money

  • Consider connecting via Naha, which is sometimes cheaper than flying direct. It does add travel time.
  • Stay put on Ishigaki and day-trip to the islands. Taketomi is 10 minutes away, Iriomote 40. You can tour the islands without changing hotels.
  • Make Yaeyama soba your lunch, at around ¥700. Save Ishigaki beef for the evening and your daily food bill stays down.
  • Go in winter (December–February): airfares and lodging are at their lowest, and 18–23°C is perfectly comfortable for sightseeing.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth staying on Taketomi?

Very much so. After the day trippers leave, Taketomi becomes a world of red-tiled houses and stars, and nothing else. The sunset from the West Pier and a sky free of light pollution belong to overnight guests alone. Rooms are very few, so book months ahead.

How many days do I need?

At least three nights: a day on Ishigaki, half a day on Taketomi, a day on Iriomote. Boats can be cancelled, so you need slack.

Planning essentials for Ishigaki & Taketomi (Yaeyama)

Beyond the main topic of this article, here is a summary of everything you need to plan a trip to Ishigaki & Taketomi (Yaeyama), with links to the full article on each subject.

A one-day route at a glance

9:00 Ishigaki Port ferry terminal → 9:15 Taketomi Island → 9:45 Water buffalo cart through the village → 11:00 Kondoi Beach & the West Pier → 13:00 Back to Ishigaki → 14:30 Kabira Bay → 16:30 Tamatorizaki Observatory → 18:30 Ishigaki after dark

With half a day, go to Taketomi. It is 10 minutes by boat, and the buffalo cart plus a walk through the village takes 2–3 hours. If you are staying on Ishigaki, drive to Kabira Bay and the lookouts.

Extending beyond day one

On day 2, go to Iriomote (40 minutes by boat from Ishigaki): kayaking through the mangroves, Pinaisara Falls (55 m), and crossing to Yubu Island by water buffalo cart, wading the shallows. Alternatives are Kuroshima (more cattle than people), Kohama (the setting of an NHK drama), or Hateruma (the southernmost inhabited island in Japan, where you can see the Milky Way). From day 3, add another island, or dive and snorkel off Ishigaki. The Yaeyamas need at least three nights, and four or five if you are island-hopping. For the full timed itinerary, see the Ishigaki & Taketomi (Yaeyama) itinerary.

Seasons and temperatures

Season Typical temperatures Highlights and cautions
Spring (Mar–May)21–28°CSwimming from March. The rainy season starts in mid-May
Summer (Jun–Sep)27–32°CHot and humid, and the season of highest typhoon risk
Autumn (Oct–Nov)24–29°CTyphoons ease off and the sea is still warm. The most comfortable season
Winter (Dec–Feb)18–23°CA little cool for swimming but comfortable for sightseeing. Some days bring strong north winds

October–November and March to early May. Those months are the most comfortable and carry the lowest typhoon risk. Water clarity is high year-round, but summer (June–September) carries the highest typhoon risk. Winter is less suited to swimming, though it brings fewer visitors and the most beautiful night skies. Clothing guidance and seasonal events are covered in the best time to visit Ishigaki & Taketomi (Yaeyama).

What to eat

  • Ishigaki beef: Yaeyama black wagyu, served as steak and yakiniku. Cheaper here than on the mainland
  • Yaeyama soba: Thinner and rounder noodles than Okinawa Island soba, topped with finely shredded pork and fish cake
  • Gurukun: The prefectural fish of Okinawa. Usually deep-fried
  • Irabucha: A blue-bodied parrotfish. Served as sashimi or pan-fried in butter
  • Umibudo: Sea grapes, a seaweed with a popping texture. Farmed in the Yaeyamas too
  • Pineapple & mango: In season in summer (June–August). Tree-ripened fruit is another thing entirely from mainland produce
  • Awamori from Yaeyama distilleries: Seifuku, Yaesen, Tamanaha and others. Each island has its own distilleries

Lunch ¥800–1,500 (Yaeyama soba around ¥700), dinner ¥3,000–7,000 (¥5,000–10,000 for Ishigaki beef). Some ingredients cost more because these are remote islands, but Ishigaki beef and island fish are at source prices. For where to find each dish, see what to eat in Ishigaki & Taketomi (Yaeyama).

More frequently asked questions about Ishigaki & Taketomi (Yaeyama)

How many days do the Yaeyamas need?

At least three nights: a day on Ishigaki, half a day on Taketomi, a day on Iriomote. Four or five if you want Hateruma or Kuroshima too. Boats are cancelled in bad weather, so you need slack.

Can I stay on Taketomi?

Yes. There are a few minshuku in the village, and staying gives you the quiet island after the day trippers leave, plus the night sky. Rooms are very few, so book early.

Are the stars really that good?

In 2018 Ishigaki became the first place in Japan certified as an International Dark Sky Place. Of the 88 constellations observable in Japan, 84 can be seen here, and the Southern Cross too when conditions allow. Taketomi and Hateruma have even less light pollution, and the Milky Way is clearly visible.

What is the typhoon risk?

June to October, especially August and September. The Yaeyamas sit in the typhoon track, and a direct hit stops flights and boats for two or three days. If you travel then, allow slack in your schedule and take insurance with cancellation cover.

Is Ishigaki beef cheaper than on the mainland?

At the source, it feels about 30–40% cheaper than an equivalent restaurant in Tokyo. Yakiniku runs around ¥5,000, steak from around ¥8,000.

Can I eat on Taketomi?

There are a few places in the village, but they close around 5 PM. Lunch is fine on a day trip, but if you are staying overnight, choose lodging that includes dinner.

Can I get to Hateruma?

It is the southernmost inhabited island in Japan, 1 hour 15 minutes by fast ferry from Ishigaki. The crossing is on the open sea, though, so cancellations are frequent, and the annual operating rate is only around 60–70%. Go only with slack in your schedule. The night sky there is among the finest in Japan.

Do I need an international driving permit?

Yes, if you are going to drive a rental car. Obtain an International Driving Permit under the Geneva Convention before you travel.

Can I cycle on Taketomi?

Rental bicycles are available. But the white sand lanes are hard going on a bike, and they are also the roads people live on. Ride slowly through the village, or push the bike.

Is snorkeling safe?

On a guided tour, yes. Swimming alone carries the risk of rip currents and dangerous marine life. Wear marine shoes, stay inside the swimming areas, and always go in with others.
