Cuts that actually save money
- Stay put in Osaka and day-trip across Kansai. Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji are all within an hour. No changing hotels, and cheaper rooms.
- The Enjoy Eco Card: a subway and city bus day pass at ¥820 on weekdays, ¥620 on weekends and holidays, with attraction discounts attached.
- Eat in Ura-Namba. One lane back from the tourist prices of Dotonbori, it is cheaper and better.
- Consider the Kansai Area Pass: a JR West product that covers your day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji in one.
Frequently asked questions
Which area of Osaka should I stay in?
Umeda (JR Osaka station) is better for day trips to Kyoto, Kobe, and Himeji; Namba is better for Dotonbori and for Kansai Airport. They are about 15 minutes apart by subway, so you can simply choose on price.
Shin-Imamiya is cheap. Is it all right?
It is the cheapest lodging area in Osaka, and new hotels have opened there in recent years. But the surrounding area has a history as a day-labourer district and the atmosphere at night is distinctive. If that concerns you, we would suggest Umeda or Namba.

Planning essentials for Osaka
Beyond the main topic of this article, here is a summary of everything you need to plan a trip to Osaka, with links to the full article on each subject.
A one-day route at a glance
9:00 Osaka Castle → 11:00 Kuromon Market → 12:30 Dotonbori → 14:00 Hozenji Yokocho and Sennichimae → 15:00 Tsutenkaku and Shinsekai → 17:00 Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory → 19:00 Dinner in Kitashinchi or Ura-Namba
With half a day: Dotonbori, Kuromon Market, and kushikatsu in Shinsekai. Osaka is a city for eating rather than looking, so narrowing it to the markets and the nightlife districts is the right call.
Extending beyond day one
Day 2 is a day trip to Kyoto, Nara, or Kobe, all 30 to 60 minutes away. Or stay in the city for Sumiyoshi Taisha (the oldest style of shrine architecture in Japan), Shitennoji (founded by Prince Shotoku), and the National Bunraku Theatre (puppet theatre). Many people give a whole day to Universal Studios Japan. From day 3, Himeji Castle (an hour by rapid train) or Wakayama and Koyasan. Staying put in Osaka and day-tripping across Kansai is the most efficient and the most economical shape for a trip. For the full timed itinerary, see the Osaka itinerary.

What to eat
- Takoyaki: The soul of Osaka. Molten inside, barely set outside. Eight for ¥400–600, with the batter different at every shop
- Okonomiyaki: The Osaka version mixes batter and fillings before grilling (the Hiroshima version layers them). ¥900–1,500
- Kushikatsu: Battered, deep-fried skewers. The shared sauce is strictly one dip only. ¥120–250 a skewer
- Kitsune udon: Invented in Osaka. Soft noodles in a clear kombu broth. ¥500–800
- Fugu: Osaka eats more pufferfish than anywhere in Japan. Tecchiri (hot pot) and tessa (sashimi). Winter is the season
- Butaman: Steamed pork buns that draw queues at the stands in Osaka station and Namba. A standard souvenir to carry home
- Kitashinchi kappo: The high-end district of Osaka. Less formal than Kyoto, and at least as good
Breakfast ¥500–1,000, lunch ¥800–1,500, dinner ¥3,000–8,000. Osaka is the cheapest major Japanese city for eating out. Takoyaki ¥500, ten kushikatsu ¥1,500, kitsune udon ¥600. With ¥3,000 you will be thoroughly full. For where to find each dish, see what to eat in Osaka.
Getting there

Local transport and the passes worth buying are covered in getting to Osaka.
Good to know before you go
- Bag snatching: High by Japanese standards. Do not carry your bag on the road side, and do not leave it in a bicycle basket
- Touts in Dotonbori and Minami: Avoid any place that solicits you on the street. There are real cases of grossly inflated bills
- Getting lost underground: The Umeda and Namba underground malls are among the largest in Japan. Note your exit number
- Stand on the right: Osaka stands right on escalators and leaves the left clear (the opposite of Tokyo)
- Kushikatsu sauce: One dip only. The container is shared, and this is a hygiene rule
- Nishinari and the Airin district: A day-labourer neighbourhood with a distinctive atmosphere at night. There is no need to go in
- Summer heatstroke: Above 35C with high humidity. Use the underground malls
Etiquette and emergency contacts are covered in what to know before visiting Osaka.
More frequently asked questions about Osaka
How many days does Osaka need?
One or two days for the city itself. But as a base for Kansai it justifies three to five nights. Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji are all day trips, and rooms cost 60–70 percent of Kyoto rates.
Should I stay in Kyoto or Osaka?
Osaka if budget matters most, Kyoto if you want Kyoto mornings and evenings. Osaka has far more choice of accommodation and lower prices, and Kyoto is 30 minutes away by rapid train.
Is the Tenjin Matsuri worth seeing?
It is one of the three great festivals of Japan, and you get 100 boats on the Okawa river and fireworks at the same time. It runs only on July 24–25 and is extremely crowded.
How do I handle Osaka in summer?
The underground malls at Umeda and Namba are so developed that you can move and eat entirely below ground. Underground and indoors by day, outdoors from evening, is the realistic structure.
Where should I eat takoyaki?
The famous Dotonbori shops have queues, but Osaka has hundreds of takoyaki shops. Locals buy from the one near home. The standard is decent everywhere, so there is no need to stand in line.
What does no double-dipping mean?
The sauce container is shared between customers. Dipping a skewer you have already bitten is prohibited for hygiene. If you want more sauce, scoop it with the free cabbage and pour it over.
How do I get from Kansai Airport into the city?
For Namba, the Nankai Rapi:t in 38 minutes for ¥1,490, or the Nankai airport express in 45 minutes for ¥970. For Umeda and Osaka station, the JR Kanku Rapid in 70 minutes for ¥1,210 (covered by the JR Pass). Straight to Kyoto, the Haruka limited express takes 75 minutes.
Is basing in Osaka efficient?
For touring Kansai, it is the most efficient there is. Kyoto 30 minutes, Nara 45, Kobe 21, Himeji 60, all on the JR Special Rapid Service and all without a change. And rooms cost 60–70 percent of Kyoto rates.
Is Osaka unsafe?
The figures for bag snatching and similar are higher than in other Japanese cities, but next to a North American city it is overwhelmingly safe. Walking at night is not in itself a problem. Watching how you carry your bag is enough.
Are the touts in Minami dangerous?
Restaurants and bars that solicit on the street have genuinely produced cases of outrageous bills. Not engaging is the only defence. Decide where you want to eat in advance.
