Contents
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is one of the most expensive stretches of transit in Japanese tourism, at around ¥14,000 one way for the full crossing from Tateyama to Ogizawa. But six modes of transport up to 2,450 m is an experience with no substitute.
Hotel rates (per person per night, two sharing a room)
| Class | Per night | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | ¥7,000–12,000 | Business hotels by Toyama station |

Daily spending
| Category | Per day | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| Alpine Route, full crossing | around ¥14,000 | Tateyama to Ogizawa one way. A round trip roughly doubles it |
| Shinkansen to Toyama | around ¥13,000 | One way from Tokyo. 2 hours |
| Food | ¥4,000–8,000 | Meals on the mountain plus Toyama sushi |
| Lodging | ¥12,000–25,000 | Toyama city or a hot-spring town |
A sample budget
A one-night, two-day trip from Tokyo runs ¥50,000–70,000 per person (roughly CA$500–700): shinkansen round trip ¥26,000, Alpine Route one way ¥14,000, one night ¥15,000, food ¥8,000. With a nationwide JR Pass the shinkansen is covered, bringing it down to around ¥40,000.
Cuts that actually save money
- Cross one way. Entering from Toyama and exiting to Nagano (Ogizawa) is cheaper than a round trip and wastes no backtracking. Send your luggage ahead by courier to your next hotel.
- Use the JR Pass: the Tokyo–Toyama shinkansen round trip is ¥26,000. The Alpine Route itself is not covered, but the shinkansen fare disappears.
- Eat sushi in Toyama. It runs about 60 percent of Tokyo prices for equivalent quality. One of the best reasons to spend a night in the city.
- Limit yourself to the Murodo round trip: cheaper than the full crossing, and you still get the heart of the route, the snow walls and the Murodo plateau.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Alpine Route fare too expensive?
It is genuinely expensive. But nowhere else in the world can you ride public transport through six different vehicles to 2,450 m. Consider that the fare also funds the winter snow clearing and maintenance that make the route possible.
Is staying at Murodo worth it?
Yes. Once the day visitors leave, Murodo is silence at 2,450 m: stars, a morning sea of clouds, sunrise on the Tateyama range. Hotel Tateyama is the highest hotel in Japan.

Planning essentials for Tateyama Kurobe & Toyama
Beyond the main topic of this article, here is a summary of everything you need to plan a trip to Tateyama Kurobe & Toyama, with links to the full article on each subject.
A one-day route at a glance
8:00 Tateyama station (Toyama side) → 8:20 Tateyama Cable Car → 9:00 Highland bus to Murodo → 10:00 Murodo (2,450 m) → 12:00 Lunch at Murodo → 13:00 Trolleybus to Daikanbo → 13:30 Ropeway to Kurobedaira → 14:30 Kurobe Dam → 16:00 To Ogizawa (Nagano side)
There is no half-day version of the Alpine Route. Even one way takes 6 hours. If time is short, limit yourself to the round trip from the Toyama side to Murodo (about 6 hours).
Extending beyond day one
The Alpine Route can be crossed in a single day. Most travelers pair it with Toyama on one side (Toyama Bay sushi, streetcars, and Kansui Park with its famously beautiful Starbucks) or Unazuki Onsen and the Kurobe Gorge Railway. Exiting on the Nagano side leads to Omachi Onsen, Matsumoto, and Kamikochi; returning to Toyama opens up Takaoka (the Great Buddha and metal casting) and Gokayama (gassho-zukuri farmhouses). The Hokuriku Shinkansen stops at Toyama, exactly 2 hours from Tokyo. For the full timed itinerary, see the Tateyama Kurobe & Toyama itinerary.
Seasons and temperatures
| Season | Typical temperatures | Highlights and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Apr–Jun) | Murodo -3–8C | Opens mid April. The snow walls peak at about 20 m in late April |
| Summer (Jul–Aug) | Murodo 8–17C | Alpine wildflower season, and the easiest walking on the Murodo plateau |
| Autumn (Sep–Oct) | Murodo 0–13C | Foliage from late September, among the earliest autumn colors in Japan |
| Winter (late Nov–mid Apr) | Closed | The route shuts. Snow at Murodo reaches 20 m deep |
Late April (the snow walls at their tallest), July–August (alpine flowers and the friendliest weather), and late September to early October (the earliest autumn colors in Japan): three different attractions. The Kurobe Dam water release runs only late June to mid October, so seeing it means summer or autumn. Clothing guidance and seasonal events are covered in the best time to visit Tateyama Kurobe & Toyama.
What to eat
- White shrimp (shiroebi): A small shrimp fished commercially only in Toyama Bay. The sashimi is called the jewel of the bay. Season April–November
- Firefly squid (hotaru-ika): March–May only, when swarms fill the bay and light the night sea blue. Served as sashimi and marinated
- Winter yellowtail (kan-buri): Himi yellowtail, November–February, widely held to be the finest winter fish in Japan
- Masu-zushi: Pressed trout sushi sold as an ekiben, the classic Toyama souvenir, different from every maker
- Toyama black ramen: Jet-black soy broth, aggressively salty, and properly eaten with a bowl of white rice
- White shrimp kakiage bowl: White shrimp fried into a crisp fritter over rice, found around Toyama station
- Dining at Murodo: Curry and set meals at Hotel Tateyama, 2,450 m up. Eating there is part of the experience
Lunch ¥1,200–2,500; omakase sushi ¥4,000–8,000 (about half Tokyo prices); dinner ¥3,500–7,000. Toyama seafood offers one of the best quality-to-price ratios in Japan. Meals on the Alpine Route run ¥1,200–2,000. For where to find each dish, see what to eat in Tateyama Kurobe & Toyama.

More frequently asked questions about Tateyama Kurobe & Toyama
Can I cross the Alpine Route in one day?
Yes. Tateyama station on the Toyama side to Ogizawa on the Nagano side takes 6–8 hours including transfers. But if you want time for photos and a proper walk at Murodo, start early.
When can I see the snow walls?
From the opening in mid April until mid June. The walls are at their tallest right after opening in late April, about 20 m, and you walk between them.
Is there snow even in summer?
Yes. Permanent snowfields linger around Murodo, and even in July–August some stretches cross snow. Wear shoes with decent grip.
When does the Kurobe Dam release water?
Late June to mid October. Outside that window you see the dam wall but no release. On clear mornings, rainbows form in the spray.
Is Toyama sushi really that cheap?
Our honest estimate: about 60 percent of the Tokyo price for the same quality. The prefecture actively promotes itself as a sushi destination, and the good restaurants are concentrated in the city.
When can I see the firefly squid?
March to May, when the swarms enter Toyama Bay. On some nights the shore glows blue with the phenomenon locals call the squid casting themselves ashore, but the right conditions come only a few nights a season.
Can I do it by car?
You can drive to Tateyama station or Ogizawa, but no further, because the route itself is closed to private vehicles. If you cross, your car stays behind; use the paid forwarding service or come back the same way.
Do I need reservations?
In peak periods (late April–early May and late September–mid October), some segments run reservation or numbered-ticket systems. If you are traveling then, booking ahead is strongly recommended.
I am worried about altitude sickness.
Serious altitude sickness at Murodo (2,450 m) is rare, but headaches and breathlessness do happen. On arrival, do not rush around. Take the first 30 minutes slowly, and keep drinking water.
Can children and older travelers manage it?
Yes. Everything up to Murodo is by vehicle, and the walking is on flat trails. Just respect the altitude and the cold, and bring warm layers without fail.
