What to eat in Kakunodate & Lake Tazawa
| Dish | What it is and where to try it |
|---|---|
| Inaniwa udon | Akita’s flat hand-stretched noodles, prized for their texture. Served cold with dipping sauce is the original way |
| Kiritanpo nabe | Pounded rice wrapped on a skewer and grilled, then simmered in Hinai-jidori broth. Autumn and winter is its real season |

| Saimyoji chestnuts | Large chestnuts grown around Kakunodate and used in autumn sweets |
Where to eat
Kakunodate’s restaurants cluster on and around the samurai street, but there are not many and most close by around 5 PM, so dinner is normally taken at your inn. At Nyuto Onsen there is essentially no option besides your inn’s kitchen. Go as far as Akita City and you reach Kawabata, a dense restaurant quarter of regional cooking and sake bars.
What meals cost
Lunch ¥1,200–2,000; dinner ¥4,000–10,000 including inn meals. A night at Nyuto Onsen with two meals runs ¥15,000–30,000, and these mountain inns are known for cooking well above what the setting suggests.
Frequently asked questions
Is kiritanpo available year-round?
Some restaurants serve it all year, but it is properly an autumn and winter dish. It is considered best when the new rice comes in, October to November.
Are there dinner restaurants in Kakunodate?
A handful, but most close between 5 and 6 PM. If you stay in Kakunodate, book an inn that includes dinner; otherwise plan on moving on to Akita City or Omagari.

Planning essentials for Kakunodate & Lake Tazawa
Beyond the main topic of this article, here is a summary of everything you need to plan a trip to Kakunodate & Lake Tazawa, with links to the full article on each subject.
A one-day route at a glance
9:30 Kakunodate Station → 10:00 Samurai district → 11:30 Aoyagi House → 12:30 Lunch in Kakunodate → 14:00 Move on to Lake Tazawa → 14:50 Lake Tazawa & the Tatsuko statue → 16:30 Nyuto Onsen → 18:00 Overnight at Tsuru-no-yu
With half a day, the samurai street alone is a complete visit. Twenty minutes from the station, 400 m end to end, and two hours is enough for the main houses.
Extending beyond day one
Day two is for onsen-hopping around Nyuto. Buy the Yumeguri-cho pass (around ¥2,500) and you can bathe once at each of the seven inns. Alternatively, head into Akita City for the Oga Peninsula, home of the namahage, or Senshu Park. On day three, continue north to Hirosaki and Aomori, or south to Ginzan Onsen and Yamagata. Kakunodate sits mid-route on the Akita Shinkansen, so it slots easily into a Tokyo–Akita journey. For the full timed itinerary, see the Kakunodate & Lake Tazawa itinerary.
Seasons and temperatures
| Season | Typical temperatures | Highlights and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Apr–May) | 3–19°C | Blossoms in late April. Kakunodate is one of Tohoku’s great cherry sites, and for those two weeks the crowds are in another league |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 17–29°C | Humid and hot in the basin. Lake Tazawa and Nyuto Onsen sit higher and stay cooler |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 6–23°C | Fall color from mid-October into early November. The beech forest around Nyuto Onsen is superb |
| Winter (Dec–Mar) | -4–3°C | One to two meters of snow. Black fences under snow, and open-air baths in it |
Late April (cherry blossoms) and mid-October to early November (fall color) stand above everything else. Rooms are hard to get and prices rise during blossom season, so if you want a quiet walk, come mid-May to June, or in the snow of January and February. More frequently asked questions about Kakunodate & Lake Tazawa
When do Kakunodate’s cherry trees bloom?
Late April. The samurai street has 400 weeping cherries, 162 of them designated national natural monuments, and the Hinokinai riverbank has a 2 km avenue of Somei-Yoshino. Crowds in that window are on another scale entirely.
Can I book Tsuru-no-yu at Nyuto Onsen?
It is extremely popular and fills months in advance. Day-use bathing (around ¥800) is possible but only during limited hours. Ask us and we will arrange it.
Is cherry-blossom season crowded?
Very. The samurai street fills wall to wall and lodging sells out six months ahead. Come before 7 AM, though, and you get the blossoms and the black fences in near silence.
Can I visit the samurai houses in winter?
Yes, though some houses close for the season and fewer rooms are open. In exchange, the snowy street is quiet and worth seeing in its own right.
Is the trip pointless without a night at Nyuto Onsen?
Not at all. The samurai district and Lake Tazawa make a solid half-day to full-day trip on their own. That said, Nyuto Onsen is one of Japan’s defining hidden hot springs, and staying there is genuinely worth it.
Can I do Kakunodate as a day trip?
Easily from Akita City or Morioka. From Tokyo it means six hours of travel in a day, which is not realistic.
When is the last bus to Nyuto Onsen?
It varies by season, but the last departure from Tazawako Station is generally between 5 and 6 PM, and earlier in winter. Confirm locally on the day.
Can I get from Kakunodate to Hirosaki or Aomori?
Take the Akita Shinkansen to Akita, then the Limited Express Tsugaru to Hirosaki or Aomori, about three hours. You can also route via Morioka and change to the Tohoku Shinkansen. Both are covered by the JR Pass.
Is Nyuto Onsen manageable for first-timers?
Yes. Just do not expect city-hotel amenities. These are mountain inns, and that is precisely their value. Some buildings are cold indoors, so thick socks make winter far more comfortable.
I am uncomfortable with mixed bathing.
Every inn at Nyuto has either a women-only bath or women-only hours, and apart from Tsuru-no-yu the inns mainly have separate men’s and women’s baths. Raise it when you book and we will sort it out.
