Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) is soba country. Being landlocked, it also developed a culture of preserved foods all its own: miso, nozawana pickles, and horse meat. Matsumoto, with its many sake breweries, is the place to sample the full Shinshu table.

Where to eat

Matsumoto dining clusters around Nakamachi and Nawate streets and the station area. The best soba houses are scattered across town. Arrive right at the 11:30 opening and you walk straight in. Kamikochi has only lodge dining rooms and a few kiosks; there are no real options. If you are spending the day there, buy a bento in Matsumoto or book meals at your lodge. Matsumoto nightlife centers on the izakaya around the station and Ote.

What meals cost

Lunch ¥1,000–2,000, dinner ¥3,000–6,000. Matsumoto prices are gentle: soba, sanzoku-yaki, and local sake are all reasonably priced. Kamikochi meals carry mountain prices, typically around ¥1,500.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I eat soba?

Matsumoto has more than ten celebrated soba houses. Look for handmade noodles with a high buckwheat ratio, because that is where the Shinshu character shows. Arriving at the 11:30 opening means the shortest wait.

Are there places to eat in Kamikochi?

There are hotel dining rooms and kiosks around Kappa Bridge, but they are few and the lunch peak is crowded. If you are walking, the reliable plan is a bento bought in Matsumoto or Sawando.

Planning essentials for Matsumoto & Kamikochi

Beyond the main topic of this article, here is a summary of everything you need to plan a trip to Matsumoto & Kamikochi, with links to the full article on each subject.

A one-day route at a glance

9:00 Matsumoto station → 9:30 Matsumoto Castle → 11:00 Nakamachi and Nawate streets → 12:30 Lunch in Matsumoto → 14:00 Matsumoto City Museum of Art → 15:30 Asama Onsen → 18:00 Evening in Matsumoto

With half a day, just Matsumoto Castle and Nakamachi street. Kamikochi takes three hours round trip in buses alone, so it does not work as a half-day.

Extending beyond day one

Day 2 is Kamikochi: an hour and a half by bus from Matsumoto, a scenic valley along the Azusa River at 1,500 m. The standard walk is the round trip from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond (about 2 hours), with the Hotaka range rising straight ahead. Private cars are banned, so you transfer to a dedicated bus at Sawando or Hirayu. On day 3, go to Shirahone Onsen (milky-white waters) or the Norikura highlands, or head south to walk the Nakasendo post towns of Narai and Tsumago. Matsumoto is a gateway to both the Nakasendo and the Northern Alps. For the full timed itinerary, see the Matsumoto & Kamikochi itinerary.

Good to know before you go

  • Bears in Kamikochi: Asian black bear habitat. There have been sightings even on the main trails; carrying a bell is recommended
  • Sudden weather changes: Sun to rain and fog in minutes. Always carry rain gear
  • Monkeys: Japanese macaques live in Kamikochi. Do not show food, do not make eye contact

More frequently asked questions about Matsumoto & Kamikochi

Can I do Kamikochi as a day trip?

From Matsumoto, yes: morning bus in, walk Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond, evening bus out. But staying a night in Kamikochi rewards you with the silence after the day-trippers leave, and morning mist on the Azusa River.

What makes Matsumoto Castle special?

Only 12 castles in Japan retain keeps built before the Edo period ended, and only 5 of those are National Treasures. Matsumoto is one of them. The black-lacquered keep against the Northern Alps is among the finest castle views in Japan.

When is Kamikochi open?

Typically from mid April (the opening festival) to mid November. In winter the lodges close and buses stop running; only equipped mountaineers go in.

When do the Matsumoto Castle cherry blossoms bloom?

Mid April. For several evenings the castle grounds are illuminated, and the contrast of black keep and pale blossoms is superb.

Is staying overnight in Kamikochi worth it?

Yes. After the last bus leaves, the valley belongs to overnight guests alone. Morning mist on the Azusa River and sunrise on the Hotaka range are things only they see. But the lodges fill months in advance.

Can I day-trip to Matsumoto from Tokyo?

The limited express takes 2 hours 35 minutes, so it is possible, but you get only about 6 hours on the ground. The castle and Nakamachi street fit; adding Kamikochi requires an overnight.

Can I drive to Kamikochi?

No. Private cars are banned year-round: you park at Sawando or Hirayu and switch to a shuttle bus or taxi. The restriction exists to protect the valley.

Can I get from Matsumoto to Takayama?

Yes: about 3.5 hours via Kamikochi (changing at Hirayu), or 4 hours around via Nagoya. The Kamikochi route lets you stop in the valley on the way.

Is Kamikochi easy walking?

The trails from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond and Taisho Pond are nearly flat, paved or boardwalk, and fine in sneakers. After rain they get muddy, so waterproof shoes are more comfortable.

Can I climb the castle keep?

Yes, but one staircase is pitched at 61 degrees, which is extremely steep. There are handrails and most visitors manage, but if your knees are doubtful, do not force it.
