What to know before visiting Hakodate: local etiquette and pitfalls

Hakodate Ya-K Night Drive & Snack Hopping

The things that catch North American travelers off guard in Hakodate, laid out in advance. Less about danger, more about not losing time and money.

Contents

Hakodate is a safe city, and walking Motomachi or Goryokaku at night is no problem. What deserves attention instead: the steep slopes, the sea wind, and the nighttime traffic restrictions on Mt. Hakodate. In winter, wind off the sea and icy pavement matter more than snowfall.

Things that catch visitors off guard

Topic How it really works
Steep Motomachi slopesHachiman-zaka and its neighbors are steeper than they look, and the cobblestones get slick in rain or snow
Mt. Hakodate crowdsAround sunset the ropeway wait hits 40–60 minutes. Build in time
Summit coldEven in summer the summit sits in the low teens Celsius, and the sea wind makes it feel colder
Night traffic restrictionsPrivate cars are barred from the Mt. Hakodate road at night (roughly 5–10 PM)
Check market prices firstSome stalls list “market price.” Always confirm the amount before ordering
Winter sea windLittle snow, but hard wind that drives the felt temperature down. Bring a windproof outer layer
Riding the streetcarBoard at the rear, exit at the front, pay as you get off. Take a numbered ticket when you board

How to handle yourself

The Motomachi churches are active places of worship. The Russian Orthodox Church prohibits interior photography during services, and visiting hours are limited. The hillside streets are ordinary residential neighborhoods, so stay off private property and keep your voice down early and late. Sampling at the morning market carries no obligation to buy; however, if you catch a live squid at a fishing tank, you are expected to buy it. On the Mt. Hakodate observation deck, spreading a tripod claims space others need. Be considerate, especially when it is crowded.

If something goes wrong

Police 110, fire and ambulance 119. Hakodate is the hub city of southern Hokkaido with solid medical care, led by Hakodate Municipal Hospital. In strong winter winds, the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway stops running. The Tsugaru Strait is also a fog- and gale-prone crossing where ferries and flights cancel easily, so pad your schedule on any winter day you enter or leave Hakodate. For clients booked with us, we line up alternate routes if a cancellation hits.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to walk alone at night?

Yes. Some stretches of the Motomachi slopes are dimly lit at night, but this is a city with virtually no safety concerns.

I am worried about all the hills.

Combine the streetcar, the ropeway, and the sightseeing bus that loops through Motomachi and you barely have to climb at all. Ride up, walk down: that is the easy way.

Planning essentials for Hakodate

Beyond the main topic of this article, here is a summary of everything you need to plan a trip to Hakodate, with links to the full article on each subject.

A one-day route at a glance

7:00 Hakodate Morning Market → 9:00 Goryokaku → 11:00 Streetcar to Motomachi → 11:30 Motomachi churches and slopes → 13:00 Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses → 15:00 Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward → 17:30 Ropeway up Mt. Hakodate → 19:00 Back down for dinner

With half a day: the Motomachi slopes and churches, the Red Brick Warehouses, then the night view from Mt. Hakodate. Let the morning market and Goryokaku go. The night view is the one thing in Hakodate you should not miss.

Extending beyond day one

On day two, unwind at Yunokawa Onsen (a hot-spring district 20 minutes away by streetcar, inside the city) or walk the lake-and-volcano scenery of Onuma Quasi-National Park (20 minutes by JR). Or revisit the Trappistine Convent and Goryokaku at a slower pace. With a third day, try Matsumae, Hokkaido’s only castle town and a famous cherry blossom spot, or the historic streets of Esashi. Hakodate anchors southern Hokkaido, and its history and mood are quite unlike the rest of the island. For the full timed itinerary, see the Hakodate itinerary.

Seasons and temperatures

Season Typical temperatures Highlights and cautions
Spring (Apr–May)4–17°CCherry blossoms in early May: 1,600 trees at Goryokaku and 250 varieties at Matsumae
Summer (Jun–Aug)14–24°CCool and pleasant, but foggy. Some days the view from Mt. Hakodate never appears
Autumn (Sep–Oct)8–21°CCrisp air and the year’s best visibility for the night view. Fall color in late October
Winter (Nov–Mar)-6–2°CLess snow than Sapporo but a hard sea wind. The winter night view, through clear cold air, is exceptional

Late September through October, and early May for cherry blossoms. In September–October the air is clearest, the night view is at its best, and the seafood is in season. In July–August, fog is frequent, which is risky if the night view is your main goal. Winter is beautiful but the wind takes a toll. Clothing guidance and seasonal events are covered in the best time to visit Hakodate.

What to eat

  • Squid: The symbol of Hakodate. At the morning market, live squid is prepared before your eyes. In season June–December
  • Kaisendon: ¥2,000–4,000 at the market canteens. Compose your own mix of uni, salmon roe, scallop, and crab
  • Hakodate shio ramen: A clear, salt-based broth, one of Hokkaido’s big three ramens, alongside Sapporo miso and Asahikawa shoyu
  • Burgers (Lucky Pierrot): A chain that exists only in and around Hakodate. This is what locals actually eat, not a tourist attraction
  • Yakitori bento: The signature item at Hasegawa Store, a local convenience chain. It is actually pork. Everyday Hakodate food
  • Sweets and curry: Curry at Goshiken, and butter candy and cookies from the Trappist monastery

Breakfast ¥2,000–4,000 (seafood bowl), lunch ¥1,000–2,000, dinner ¥3,000–6,000. Only the morning market runs at tourist prices; everywhere else is reasonable. Budget ¥6,000–9,000 a day. For where to find each dish, see what to eat in Hakodate.

Budget at a glance

Figure ¥25,000–35,000 per person for 2 days / 1 night (roughly CA$250–350): ¥15,000 for the room, ¥13,000 for two days of food, ¥5,000 for transport and admissions. Upgrade to a Yunokawa onsen ryokan with dinner and breakfast and the room runs about ¥25,000.

Hotel rates by class and the cuts that actually save money are detailed in the Hakodate budget guide.

Getting there

Three routes lead to Hakodate: flying into Hakodate Airport, the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, or the limited express from Sapporo. If you hold a nationwide JR Pass, the shinkansen is the strong play, with some through-trains from Tokyo requiring no transfer.

More frequently asked questions about Hakodate

When should I see the Mt. Hakodate night view?

The most beautiful window is said to be 30 minutes after sunset, while blue still hangs in the sky. The ropeway gets jammed around sunset, so be at the base station 40 minutes early.

How many days does Hakodate need?

Two days and one night cover the main sights; two nights if you add Yunokawa Onsen or Onuma. From Sapporo it is 3.5 hours by limited express, so it does not work as a day trip.

What are the odds the night view is clouded out?

In summer (especially June–July), fog hides it about 3 days in 10. Autumn and winter have far better clear rates. If your schedule allows, set things up so you can try two nights.

When are the cherry blossoms?

Goryokaku peaks in early May, almost exactly Golden Week. If you missed the blossoms in Honshu, this is your last chance to catch up with them in Hokkaido.

Is the morning market overpriced?

It is tourist-priced, no getting around it. But live-squid sashimi at this freshness is hard to experience anywhere but Hakodate. To keep costs down, pick a shop where you choose your own toppings and keep the bowl simple.

When is squid in season?

June through December. January–May is the lean season, and some days no live squid is served. Catches have been poor in recent years and live-squid prices have climbed.

Is Yunokawa Onsen worth staying at?

Yes. No other hot-spring district sits 20 minutes by streetcar from a city center with open-air baths facing the sea. You can watch the night view from Mt. Hakodate and then come back to soak.

Is Hakodate cheaper than Sapporo?

Rooms are a bit cheaper, and outside the morning market the food prices are calm. But getting to Hakodate (flight or limited express) costs enough that the totals often end up similar.

Is the shinkansen or the plane better?

With a nationwide JR Pass, the shinkansen: Tokyo in 4 hours at no extra cost. Without a pass, the plane wins: similar fare, less than half the time.

Is Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto not the same as Hakodate Station?

They are different stations. The shinkansen station sits 18 km outside central Hakodate, connected by the 20-minute Hakodate Liner. It is an easy mix-up when booking, so double-check.
